SCOPH

At the SSS we are proud to be carrying on the same belief and spirit of SCOPH-IFMSA; the Standing Committee On Public Health (SCOPH) has been the organ of the IFMSA, IFMSA-Egypt and SSS that deals with Public Health issues.

Ever since the committee was set in the SSS in summer 2006, under the head of Reem Waziry – SCOPH-SSS' first officer – the committee has been the most active and competitive at both the local (SSS) and national (IFMSA-Egypt) level, with the greatest number of activities and outreach in the faculty, university and community.

As members of SCOPH-SSS, we are proud of how far we have taken the committee, establishing our own values and activities, raising with every new project the benchmark and hitting it.

Through the past two years, our target groups and thus our projects have been falling into one of the following categories:

1- Medical Students:

Projects are designed targeting Medical Students’ knowledge and application of Public Health information, aiming at providing future physicians with tools to convey health messages.

2- Paramedical Students:

This includes students of pharmacy, veterinary and nursing schools, who are also responsible for passing on health messages, each in their field. In addition they are responsible for raising the fundamental concept of prevention in our community. Thus by targeting this category, we are widening our platform of prevention oriented health workers.

3- The community:

This is our ultimate target and final benefit we hope to accomplish after all our efforts. It includes patients and non-patients who seek our outpatient clinics, and in addition youth in universities and clubs. By training both medical and paramedical students to learn to convey the right public health messages, as well as providing projects to serve the common public, we hope to eventually attain a community aware of the fundamental elements of health and welfare.

Our Projects

Friedrich Naumann Conference

This project was funded by Friedrich Naumann German institute.

The main theme of this conference was health economics and it's importance in the medical field in Egypt.The Organizer of this event in KasrAliny school of medicine was SSS Alumnus Called Dr.Fetouh.We as SSS members helped out in the Promotion and preparation for the event from A to Z.And we were the OC for the day.We were really happy to work with one of the oldest SSS Alumnus,this helped us know more about SSS History,in addition to the great experience we go while organizing the conference in cooperation with such Huge institute.

National Anti-TB Campaign

This campaign was held in cooperation with National TB Centre in Cairo that provided us with the materials needed.We also had TOT while preparing for the campaign.
The project was designed as national research competition for medical students to increase their awareness about TB and enhance their Research methodology skills.
The final researches all over Egypt were raised to the national competition were top three researches were selected by national committee of professors in the specified Topic.
It was very valuable experience for all of us either to know more about TB or research methodology.

Diabetes and Hypertension Awareness Campaign

This was a national project that was carried out in the Cairo University main campus&held at the University main conference hall. It was done on the same day as the Scientific Societies Festival.
The most interesting aspect of the project was the face to face awareness targeting non medical students; it astonished us to see many students eager to know more about diabetes and hypertension which helped us reaching our goals for such a campaign.
In addition to that, interviews with the national TV channels were held that day about our project.

Anti-Anemia Campaign

This campaign aimed at the community in the form of raising the awareness of families- especially mothers -about the balanced healthy diet and how to avoid anemia through preparing cheap available food. We targeted about 300 children with their families in the outpatient clinics of Abu El reish hospital throughout 5 visits.

World Heart Day celebration

It was held at the headquarters of the WHO, World Health Organization. It was done by an invitation from AFCRH(association of friends of children with rheumatic hearts) , which had a competition about’ how to deliver a message for youth about harmful things to the heart’ .During this competition we won the ‘THE BEST TEAM” award.

Avian Flu Awareness Campaign

It was held at the Kasr al Ainy outpatient clinics and was aimed at the community. All the materials were provided by the Ministry of Health.
It was one of our largest local campaigns as we targeted about 1500 visitors of the outpatient clinics. The campaign was held last November, as it is when birds migrate which is the main way of transmission of the virus all over the world.

World Diabetes Day Celebration -November 2007

It was celebrated in the nursing students of the Mubarak-Kohl nursing school by making. The day included sessions about Diabetes Mellitus, how to manage this disease, and how to avoid its complications. In addition small competitions after each session were done to ensure that our message was delivered clearly and in an interactive way.

Anti-Addiction Campaign

This campaign targeted both public &medical students in a complementary way.

Two booths were built, the first in the outpatient clinic where we were able to promote for the campaign and deal with real addicts or their families. The other was in the faculty itself, where we targeted the medical students to increase their awareness about the campaign’s objectives in case they know an addict or they want to be a part of this campaign outside the faculty. In addition to that, we made sessions about the psychology of the addicts and how to deal with them.

The campaign was held in cooperation with the national "HEMAYA" campaign.

Anti-Tobacco & Healthy-Diet National Campaign

It targeted school children to make them know more about Tobacco and its history to help them take a decision regarding smoking based on knowledge.
We made a session in ‘’Mohamed Ali’’ preparatory school that was attended by students and teachers. In addition flyers and questionnaires about smoking and healthy diet were distributed in another primary school ’’Hoda Shaarawy’’, the results were analyzed nationally.

SSS celebrating the World Diabetes Day

WDD is celebrated worldwide by over 200 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation in more than 160 countries. This year the SSS proudly shared in celebrating the World Diabetes Day.
The day was organized in one of the most important and prestigious clubs in Cairo, Al Ahly Club in Zamalek.
Direct awareness to the Club members about the disease, its complications and prevention was carried out by our members. In addition to that, measuring the blood glucose levels and blood pressure was done free of charge.

Came next, a marathon was organized in the club's football track to emphasis on the importance of physical activity and physical exercises as a prevention to the different complications of the disease. The marathon was joined by many of the club members particularly children, which emphasised on the campaign's theme 'No child should die of diabetes'
At the end of the day, Saleh Selim monument was lighted by the blue light, as one of the 930 iconic monuments worldwide that were chosen to light and mark the World Diabetes Day.

Hepatitis National Campaign

It was Under supervision of ministry of health ,USAID,CHL ,targeted university students either medical or non medical &aimed at raising the awareness about viral hepatitis (B &C).that was through direct awareness in Cairo University &giving low prices vaccination for high risk group as medical &nursing schools.
We distributed about 6000 flyers 100 poster,2700 student took the 1st dose of HBV &2000 took the 2nd one ,2 seminars had been organized
&a sport event .
There is a plan for making the whole campaign closing ceremony in Cairo University by April.

World Cancer Day 2009

The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) initiated the World Cancer Campaign in 2005 celebrated for the 1st time at Paris in 2006 .in 2009 we celebrated it for the 1st time in the IFMSA-Egypt & the SSS by organizing a 3 days campaign in 6-October club .we targeted the public there & we reached about 800 member through the direct awareness .furthermore,we held a football match to figure out the importance of sport in prevention of Cancer

The 1st Aid project

This campaign was based on ‘’peer education’’ concept. The volunteers took a 1st Aid training course in the Egyptian Red Crescent to be able to train preparatory school children on it ,then the campaign took place in 2 of Cairo's Schools “Al Waha” & “AL-Farouq” .
we targeted about 250 students in 3 sessions given by about 15 volunteers .The sessions ,based mainly on the practical part , showed the students how to deal with simple life threatening situations. There was another positive social impact as the teenagers attended & shared with great enthusiasm as they considered us a very good model being a medical students willing to help their community

Local Medical campaigns

Under the supervision of Dr.Nadia El Fiky the vice dean for students’ affairs , we contributed to the medical campaigns they arrange periodically in the rural & slum areas like Abo el Nomros ,El Ayaat where we work there as assistants for the staff members who volunteer to help people there

National Medical Campaign

As a partnership with ''Resala for charity work '',The SSS shared with other 14 Local committees within IFMSA-Egypt in the medical caravan held in Oasis .the campaign lasted 4 days ,during them ,the volunteers shared in Ophthalmology clinics & Internal medicine clinics ,distribution of medications through the pharmacy .In addition, they helped in raising awareness of people there through the clinics or by direct visits to the rural areas .the health messages included different important topics as viral hepatitis infections,hand washing ,Avian & H1N1 flu

Anti- H1N1 national campaign

We as SCOPH national team believe in the great importance of active participation in our community to face superimposed problem as H1N1 pandemic .so we started a campaign which targeted about 45.000 person including school children ,public & medical students.We as the SSS held our campaign inside the medical campus & under the supervision of the Vice dean 's office in cooperation of SHA students for health awareness .we gave sessions for our colleagues in between lectures .In addition to the direct awareness through the information booth we built .we targeted more than 3000 medical students during a 10-days campaign

World Diabetes Day celebration 2009

For the 4th year in a row ,the SSS celebrated the world diabetes day but this year we made it as a national celebration held in Al Sawy culture wheel ,Medical students from all over Egypt came to share in this event ,we targeted about 900 person of Al Sakya visitors who showed great interest to know about the risk factors & danger sign of diabetes mellitus

Slum areas development project

It's an extended project That SSS share some other NGOs & '' The Social Contract '' team in A comprehensive development project . the SSS is Responsible for the health development sector .Our role is composed of two main parts which is health awareness part on different common health problems ,in addition to the health care part as we hold some mini medical campaigns to give medical services free of charge .Nowadays we are working in ''Batn el Ba2ra '' area & soon we will extend our activities to other areas like '' Kom Ghorab '' & ''Arab Makar ''.
