The past 3 years witnessed successful and increasingly elaborate celebrations of the WAD by the SSS SCORA team. This year we had two main events related to HIV/AIDS due to its rising incidence in Egypt and the continuous ignorance of its significance.
In December 2007, on the World AIDS Day, we organized the first National Conference on AIDS, organized by students under the theme ''Young Medical Students' Leading the Response''. It was organized in cooperation with IFMSA-Egypt, our national affiliates and UNAIDS. We hosted more than 600 students and doctors from all medical schools in Egypt. Students from other faculties such as dentistry, mass communication and engineering also attended the conference. The outcome of the conference was unbelievable. We were honored to have some of the best of speakers from organizations such as NAP, CARITAS-Alexandria, Y-PEER and Dance for Life. Doctors from different faculties of medicine also contributed.
The conference discussed a large number of topics including the latest updates in HIV/AIDS research, the epidemiology of the disease and the services provided by the ministry of health for people living with HIV/AIDS in Egypt.
In addition to the conference, the SSS SCORA team also launched a campaign to increase awareness of our future doctors. It was set in the middle of campus, with us educating them about the methods of transmission and speaking to them about the seriousness of the problem, outlining its rapid growth in our country. During the campaign, which took place in March, we informed the students of the effects of stigma on the community as a whole and we asked them to each write a sentence summarizing their feelings about the syndrome.
